The Verdict:

Priced at $75, the Shift Amphibia™ Shorts offer excellent value for their quality and versatility. KÜHL's commitment to functional design and durability ensures these shorts are a worthwhile investment for those leading active lifestyles. Where we were a little disappointed was the long dry time compared to other hybrid shorts in the market at the same price point.

Fabric & Performance

The Shift Amphibia™ Shorts are crafted from a thoughtful blend of 54% nylon, 41% polyester, and 5% spandex. This combination results in a lightweight fabric that offers remarkable stretch, accommodating a wide range of movements essential for activities like hiking, climbing, or simply lounging by the water. During our dunk and soak test, we found that the DWR finish was rather ineffective. The shorts didn’t bead off water very well when we dunked them in the river and when we soaked the shorts, they held moisture much longer than other Hybrid shorts on the market.

Comfort & Fit

KÜHL's attention to detail is evident in the design of the Shift Amphibia™ Shorts. The FreeRyde™ waistband and internal drawcord allow for a customized fit, eliminating the need for a belt and ensuring the shorts stay securely in place during dynamic movements. With available inseam options of 8, 10, and 12 inches, individuals can select the length that best suits their preferences and activities. We did find these shorts seemed to fit smaller, I typically fit a 32in wait shorts/pants however these shorts did feel tighter than desired. I would recommend going a size up for those with larger legs like me.

Pockets & Practicality

The Shift Amphibia™ Shorts feature a five-pocket design that balances functionality with a sleek appearance. Chino-style flat front pockets offer a clean look while providing storage for essentials. A stealth cell phone pocket is thoughtfully integrated to securely hold a smartphone without adding bulk, ensuring quick access when needed. The patent-pending EQUALIZR™ rear pockets are designed to lay flat, maintaining a clean and incognito style. All pockets are equipped with drainage holes, facilitating quick water evacuation during aquatic activities and enhancing the shorts' quick-drying capabilities.

Durability & Longevity

The nylon-polyester-spandex blend not only contributes to the shorts' quick-drying nature but also enhances their durability. Reinforced stitching and quality materials ensure that the Shift Amphibia™ Shorts can withstand rigorous use, making them a reliable choice for extended adventures. These shorts will do very well in rough terrain but won’t look out of place when you want to hit the brewery after a day in the mountains.
